Abstract Photographs

A picture is worth a thousand words. An abstract picture - many more, or none.

There is a concept that the entirety of history has already happened. That past, present and future are all contained in one eternal moment.

Sometimes this is referred to as presence, or the now.

I explore this outlook through photography - capturing multiple moments, represented as one.

This is a view of the world we normally cannot see. It is equally as real, only not constrained by the dimension of time.

I achieve the effect using a slow shutter speed, allowing extra light to gather on the sensor before the final image is produced. I also move the camera intentionally while exposing each shot.

The result is something like a video compressed into a still image.

It is the reverse of our normal experience, where a singular, eternal moment is stretched into separate pieces.

I believe in recognizing and embracing interconnectivity as opposed to separation. And by making these images, I feel more connected to my surroundings.

As art, my goal is for the work to provoke a pause for viewers to consider if they also find connections they werenโ€™t aware of before.

This is the power of abstraction - offering infinite possibilities, removing the imposition of identifiable subjects, and introducing uncertainty, all of which can be helpful for noticing less obvious connections out in the world.
